Welcome Address to batch of 2011-2013 by the Alumni

The start of any academic year is marked by welcoming new students to the college and giving them an insight to how life would be in and after college. At NMIMS this year, this task was taken up and successfully done by Mr. Tarun Bhargava for the first year students and Mr. Ramaswamy for the second year students.

Mr. Tarun Bhargava is an alumnus of NMIMS, 1991-93 batch, and is currently working as the CFO - Future Corporate Resources Limited. He graced the orientation ceremony for the new batch of students with his presence and talked to the students about how the next two years would help them shape their career. Mr. Bhargava reminisced about his college days and while talking to students he told them the importance of being themselves and learning to set a long term objective in mind while making decisions. Mr. Bhargava was more than happy to answer the questions that the young minds put to him thus making the session interactive and vibrant.

The inauguration ceremony for the second year was graced by Mr. Krishnan‟s presence. Mr. Ramaswamy Krishnan is an NMIMS belonging to the batch of 1990-1992. He is the Director and Head of Aspire Infinite. Mr. Krishnan talked to the second year students about entrepreneurship and the challenges he faced while pursuing his dream of building an organization. Mr. Krishnan enlightened the students about the not so rosy part of entrepreneurship and how it requires constant effort and resilience to start up a new venture. He said that it was the belief in himself and support he got from people around him that he could actually take a plunge and go for opening a new venture after leaving a comfortable job. He answered the questions posed by students enthusiastically and encouraged students to follow their heart however challenging it might be.

Both these sessions received an enthusiastic response from the students who were happy to gain insights from the experiences of the esteemed speakers. The students and management both appreciated the alumni taking time out of their schedule to interact with them.

Mumbai based NMIMS University held its annual convocation on April 23.

On the occasion, offering advice to graduating students, Dr Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor of NMIMS University said: “Today we are passing through one of the most turbulent times in the global economic history after the Great Depression of 1929. Uncertainty and doubts over one’s own competencies and even the utility of education may have crossed your minds and that of your peer group. In such a situation of uncertainty, it is perseverance and always remaining focused that helps.” He added, “In a knowledge society, information is commodity. Sifting through this information and being able to take the decision creates a competitive differentiation. Hence your ability to differentiate yourself will completely rest on your comprehension of the problem, analytical and decision making skills. In the world that you are entering, no situation is ever presented in pure black and white terms because all involve human beings. Hence, a very large part of the problem will be grey in nature. This will require not only the power of rational thinking but also the ability to empathize and think through the problem emotionally.”

Acknowledging the key role of MBA programme in NMIMS University’s journey, Dr Saxena said: “SVKM’s NMIMS University was created out of India’s top 10 business school Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies. We were recognized as a Deemed University by UGC, on the strengths of our work in management education and our accreditation by NAAC, and our standing among the top business schools in India. Over the last 5 years the University diversified in areas of Technology Management and Engineering, Pharmacy and Pharma Tech Education, Architecture and Science. It also introduced innovative 5 year dual degree MBA (Tech) and undergraduate Business Administration and Commerce Programmes. It continued to strengthen its foothold in executive education through its Distance Learning Programme.”

Dr Saxena also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors including Dr. N. M. Kondap, Dr. Koli, Prof. Y. K Bhushan, and Dr. H. H. Mankad all of whom played a significant role in the evolution of NMIMS.

Dr Saxena also informed that last year was significant for the School of Business Management undertook steps to revamp its curriculum. Led by Dean Dr. Ramesh Bhatt and faculty team, a new programme design of MBA, based on the feed back from alumni, students, industry and faculty was introduced. The design was influenced by international changes, developments in other global business schools and feedback from our international academic partners. The curriculum today has some significant features like Integration Module, focus on execution and leadership.

Talking about placements, Dr Saxena said, “We are all aware that 2008-09 has been a difficult year for all Business Schools, not only in India but globally. In the global village, no country has today remained unaffected by the crises that has hit the world. But at this point of time, India economy growing at 6% is certainly a great achievement. This has helped top Business Schools like us to place our students though the process has been an extended one and still continuing at several schools.”

Dr Rajan Saxena takes over as Officiating Vice Chancellor of NMIMS University

Dr. Rajan Saxena, Senior Advisor to Chancellor & Distinguished Professor Marketing has taken over the charge as Officiating Vice Chancellor of the NMIMS University.

Dr N M Kondap has successfully completed his tenure as Vice Chancellor of SVKM's NMIMS University on 15th January 2009. Dr. Rajan Saxena is the former Director of IIM, Indore, S.P.Jain Institute of Management and Research and Dean of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.

Dr Rajan has taught at XLRI- Jamshedpur, S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai, IIM Calcutta and NMIMS and IIM Indore. He has also taught in University of Calgary, Canada and has been a British Council visitor at the University of Sterling, U.K. where he also taught in the entrepreneurship program. He is a Visiting Professor at Pace University, NY.

Dr Rajan has over 35 years of professional experience in management education, research , consulting and institution building . He is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, from where he did his Bachelor and Master's program in commerce. He did his Ph.D. work at Delhi School of Economics in marketing area and was awarded the degree by Delhi University.

Dr. Saxena provided leadership to IIM Indore. Dr. Saxena also played a significant role in creating a distinctive image for NMIMS, Mumbai between 1984 to 1999. Dr.Saxena's teaching & research interests are, Marketing Strategy, Services Marketing & Customer Relationship Management.

Dr. Saxena is a respected marketing educator and consultant. He has consulted over 50 Indian and multinational companies. Some of his well known clients are BSES (Now Reliance Energy), HDFC, MTNL Mumbai, Agrevo (formerly the agro chemical division of Hoechst and now taken over by Bayer), L&T, Parle Exports, Jindal Steel, Ispat etc. He has published 60 articles in Indian and Foreign journals . His book titled Marketing Management by Tata McGraw- Hill is today in the 3rd edition and is one of the widely used text in marketing in Indian Business Schools.

'Watch Out! We Are MBA' by Nishant Kaushik

Nishant Kaushik is a 25-year old alumnus of NMIMS, batch of 2006, whose maiden novel 'Watch Out! We Are MBA' was published by Manas Publications early in 2008. In less than ten months, the book has sold around 5000 copies and is still raring to go.

The novel is the story of Nakul Kapoor, who walks into a premier B-school and meets five friends who become important constituent of his life. Together, they witness two of the most glorious years of their lives, whereby emotions and dreams are born, nurtured, and in some cases, injured too. The book is a work of fiction, and not the author's autobiography by any measure. However, Nishant does dedicate this book to NMIMS, which he believes gave him some unforgettable memoirs and some friends for life.

The book has drawn wide acknowledgement from readers of various segments. Following are some of the review comments on the novel:

The Vice Chancellor of SVKM's NMIMS University, Dr NM Kondap was conferred the Prof Dharni Sinha Memorial Award for Excellence in Management education by Dr P N Singh Foundation at its Tenth Annual Convention on Leadership – 2008.

Dr Kondap, an M.Tech, Masters in Marketing Management and Ph.D, commended his career as a Sales Engineer at ABB and rose to become Sr. Vice President, entered into academics by being a Visiting Faculty at JBIMS, Sydenham, Chetna, Somaiyya and NMIMS. Later, he joined NMIMS as Professor of Marketing, where he held responsibilities like Dean, Director (in-charge), Pro-Vice Chancellor and Vice Chancellor.

During Dr. Kondap's tenure as Vice Chancellor, NMIMS declared as Deemed University by the Ministry of HRD and received many awards for excellence in management education like Golden Peacock Award, Dr. J J Irani Award, Gurukul Jyothi Award and BMA's Outstanding Management Institute Award for Five Years. NAAC has also accredited NMIMS with A Grade during his tenure.

The Prof Dharni Sinha Memorial Award for Excellence in Management Education was sponsored by Grid Consultants P Ltd., and has been conferred with six other Leadership Awards by Dr PN Singh, Prof YK Bhushan and Prof G Nanayakkara.

SVKM's NMIMS University of Mumbai has inaugurated its Bengaluru Operations at Koramangala on November 14, 2008. Mr. Arvaind Limbavali, Hon'ble Minister for Higher Education, Karnataka Government and dignitaries from corporate and academics were present on the occasion.

Following its philosophy of Transcending Horizons, NMIMS took its first step with Bengaluru Operations to spread its wings to other cities. NMIMS will initially offer a twenty-month weekend Management Program for Executives (MPE) leading to Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) under its Bengaluru Operations. This will be followed by a fifteen-month full time program for Executives leading to Executive PGDBM.

Delivering welcome speech on this occasion, Dr. N M Kondap, vice chancellor-NMIMS expressed his gratitude towards the chief guest and the government of Karnataka for supporting the university. He said that, "The garden city of Bengaluru has led the IT revolution in the country and attained global recognition. And I assure you that NMIMS would, in significant way, contribute towards the management development of aspiring professionals and the corporate community of the city."

While addressing the gathering, Shri Aravind Limbavali, chief guest on the occasion welcomed the NMIMS to start its operations and provide quality education to students of Karnataka. He quoted that "The state of Karnataka needs institutions like NMIMS, which are known for its quality education and have proven track record of serving society, and being the education minister of the state it will be my endeavour to bring such institutions here. I will also request NMIMS to start its operations in other cities also. Karnataka Government would always support such projects in the larger interest of local students."

The Minister also commented that he was happy to see the infrastructure that NMIMS built in a short span of time. NMIMS says that, on its part, Govt. of Karnataka has given the NOC to NMIMS just one month ago. Mr. Limbavali also announced that the state government will give piece of land to NMIMS on subsidised rates.

Responding to the minister, Shri B P Sheth, Vice President-SVKM and mentor-NMIMS said that "SVKM, a leading educational foundation imparting high level quality education is celebrating the 75th year of its inception, will ensure that quality education is offered at its new Bengaluru Operations. "

The NMIMS University, a centre of excellence for higher education in Management, Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture and science education, has won accolades such as Bombay Management Association's BMA Best Management Institute Award, BMA Best Management Teacher Award and also been rated as one of the top ten B-schools in the country since last several years.

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (NMIMS) is proud to present Paragana 2008, its Annual B-school Event. The event shall be hosted from November 15-17, 2008 and is going to be organized in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Young Indians (Yi) for the first time in its history.

The theme of Paragana this year is "Metamorphosis - Building Companies to Building Nations". From having started as simple managers, MBAs today have spread their wings far and wide across the entire spectrum of known industries. Managers have been seen building companies that are corporate empires in themselves, but how many have come forward to build the country? Sadly, the answer is negative.

‘Retail Renaissance’ 2008

‘Retail Renaissance’ was conceptualized in 2007 by students of MBA – Retail Management, at NMIMS University to provide a dedicated platform to engage students, faculty and corporate community alike to share views on current issues affecting the retail industry. It presents a knowledge sharing platform for retail and its business partners by addressing various issues from FMCG, IT, Logistics, real estate, Human resources. The seminar endeavors to discuss how the dynamics of the sectors change with the developing retail industry.

Many a times we can’t decide whether MBA education ‘happens’ more from the academic rigors or from the extra-curricular events and activities. At NMIMS, students have hosts of options to choose from and involve themselves in this regard.
